Resolution limits may be defined by the monitor or video card settings.
Post info on the video card and monitors model and version. As well to there max resolutions and whether monitor is crt or lcd.
Post contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf
As far as the program install it depends on the programs install. Most programs executable file is 80% of the time installed in /usr/bin. Usually the readme and install docs will describe where these files are. There are several ways a program can be installed. Some from source and compile yourself, precompiled and ready to install, or from a package manager.
