Hi, I think you don't need to reinstall : login in the terminal (normal username and password) and run "sudo apt-get python2.5" and use the same command to install anything else you may have deleted.
To reinstall without losing anything you just need to know if your /home folder is on a separate partition (again, login and run the "mount" command, if there is a separate /home entry, you can be pretty confident its on a separate partition).You can then simply reinstall without formatting your /home partition, which would be easiest.
To backup, connect a storage device, mount it ("mount /dev/devicename" -> you can see devicename in "dmesg" output, should be something like /dev/sdc1) and either run "cp -r /folder/to/backup /destination/folder" on the folder you want to backup, or run "dd if=/folder/to/backup of=/destination/folder".
