reinstalling linux without loosing programs

HI

I find installing programs on Mandrake ( package manager ) to be very easy compared to Slackware , so i decided to try it one more time as i have about 6 cd's with a lot of Linux software that i wanted to experiment , my question is : if i install Slackware and format only the root partition ( i have a /home too) would i be abble to work with the software previously installed on Mandrake ? everything that has been copied to the unformated partition would work as well ? I think for me it would be a really nice way to do things work on Slackware ( nothing against the way it handles things , it's just too difficult for me now ) .For instance, i just installed staroffice 5.2 iportuguese version)in less than 2minutes and lots of games too ( GL tron, overkill, flightgear,KOF 91,x logical,etc...) do you think that i could keep it when installing Slackware . The reason i'm always going back to Slack is that , believe it or not , i can configure everything that i need ( apart from tar files , so far) and it works with no problems whatsoever.help please

It may go if you have separate /usr
Star Office has everything in its' own directory, so you may just copy it into safe place and it should work.
