Red Hat 9.0 - Freeze during initialization

I'm very new at this - still doing more reading than actual using...

I've installed Red Hat 9.0. I've also completed installing the on-line updates. After rebooting my computer hangs repeatedly during the Initializing Peripherals stage.

At this point, I know my sound-card hasn't been properly detected. So I wouldn't be surprised if that's what is causing this.

Under normal circumstances, what would a more experienced user do next?

Is that still in command-line or during KDE init?

At startup check for the message:

"Press I for Interactive startup"

After pressing I, you'll be prompted to answer Y or N for starting each of the services.
Check one by one to guess which is the "offending" one.
