program running from one directory, but not another

I have a program that I installed, and is working fine, if I am in the /usr/local/bin directory. Otherwise, say I'm in the home directory, it won't work:

Code:
chris@dhcp-064-247-111-026:/usr/local/bin$ figlet fff
  __ __ __
 / _|/ _|/ _|
| |_| |_| |_
| _| _| _|
|_| |_| |_|

chris@dhcp-064-247-111-026:/usr/local/bin$ cd ~
chris@dhcp-064-247-111-026:~$ figlet fff
figlet: standard.flf: Unable to open font file
chris@dhcp-064-247-111-026:~$
what could be causing this?

Could it be an issue with your $PATH?

if it was that wouldn't it just say "command not found". Also, I have cowsay installed in /usr/local/bin and it works from everywhere like it should

edit: I fixed the problem. In the makefile, I only had a relative directory name instead of the full path to the folt directory. A reinstall fixed the problem.
