Program Directory


I was wondering where is the default directory for programs in linux or if there is one. For example in Windows its usually C:\Program Files\.

Most of the time programs tend to be installed in /usr with the actual binaries in /usr/bin. To find an application try
whereis application-name

or

which application-name

or

locate application-name

To add to the above the system binaries are usually located in /usr/sbin and if you install software from source they usually end up in /usr/local/bin or /usr/local/sbin.
