Have you checked if Mplayer is available in the repositories (using the package manager)? This is by far the easiest way to install SW.
If you have to use the tarball, first move it to some out of the way place--eg /opt, and then extract:
If it is .tgz or .tar.gz, use tar -xzvf filename
If it is .tar.bz, use tar -Xjvf filename
After extracting, you will have a new directory. cd into this and look for an install script. If you find a file named "Makefile", then the program needs to be compiled. There should be a README to tell you exactly how to proceed.
I have checked and I don't see it listed and about 70% of the prg's that are listed have errors on the install..I may have to learn how to use a different compiler.
But as I am green as grass with this OS the prob is end user related and sure of it.
I think I need to go old school and learn the long way.
