Problems installing Ububtu 8.04 LTS

Hi,
I just tried installing Ubutu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition (64-bit) on my PC (Intel Petium Dual Core 1.8GH, 512 MB ram, 160GB) but i am not able to complete. All that happens is the Ubuntu splash screen shows up for a while and then it drops into a shell. I tried it a couple of times but its the same. I then tried installing it through Windows and it installs and is running but its quite slow and wont open multiple programs with ease (its even hung once). I'm new to Linux, cant make out wats wrong

Please help me

I think you need more ram amount
