problem with sound going in and out

i have a hp compaq laptop running linux mint isadora. i've gone into the terminal and made sure settings were not on mute. i did change some and when i tried to run alsactl store; i received message
alsactl: save_state:1530: Cannot open /var/lib/alsa/asound.state for writing: Permission denied. after running alsamixer and resetting sound, it will work for a while and stop.

Have you tried

su -c 'alsactl store'

then typing root password when prompted?

Usually going back to prompt with no message, means no errors or task done.

i tried to use the webcam and had no sound, and had no sound with video on the internet, but i had sound earlier today, so i restarted and had to go into alsamixer to unmute the master portion and unmute the volume icon in the bottom right. i did have sound after that, but that's what happens continuously throughout the day....it will work for a while and stop and i'll have to restart and unmute everything. any suggestions?

Perhaps go into package manager, go to alsamixer and reinstall it this may help( just a quick click and done) sometimes it is required as the package may be at fault

no still same thing. i left the laptop on throughout the night, came back in this morning with no sound, nothing has changed in the terminal settings in alsamixer(nothing is muted). i know i can restart and it will work but i shouldn't have to do that over and over. thanks
