Postfix SMTP problem :(

hi. i'm quite new to linux but i've managed to read a lot of guidelines and it got me to where I am.

I currently have Postfix/Dovecot installed and so far 90% of it is running correctly.

I can send emails within the local server itself and recieve emails from outter world e.g. from hotmail but when I tried sending email from my server to hotmail using the webmail i don't seem to recieve anything in my hotmail.

I've been trying to read up and find out and adjusted few settings that MIGHT be the cause but still i couldn't fix my problem, so I was wondering if anyone here could give me a hand on it?

this is the current postfix config im using.
http://www.siubeen.com/~morgan/main.cf

i also tried checkin /var/log/maillog

it dont seem to have anything related to it : (

I doubt there's nothing usefull in the logs.

Try sending an email to hotmail, then afte ra few minutes

tail 100 /var/log/maillog | grep hotmail

and see what it gives up.

Post the output here if it helps

Question - why do you set myorigin to myhostname rather than mydomain?

Also, do you have a reverse DNS entry set up?

Can you send to any other extrenal addresses?

Assuming you ISP provides an smtp server, try setting relayhost to point to that (relayhost=mail.your.isp.com or whatever) and see if that works.

Is all this stuff sittin gin the queue (postqueue -p)?

A few thoughts for you

hey thanks for the quick reply : ) that was fast!

Hmm. I looked at a few things u said but I've found out that for some reason none of the stuff I do is actually going to the maillog now. I tried deleting the maillog file hoping it would recreate itself once i start using Postfix but nothing seem to log.

I also tried setting the relay host to my ISP's mail server but it didn't work. I don't have any reverse DNS or so setup.

This is what I got when i used postqueue -p.

-Queue ID- --Size-- ----Arrival Time---- -Sender/Recipient-------
0833F540081 4565 Tue Mar 11 04:53:16 root@mail.siubeen.com
(lost connection with mail.siubeen.com[125.215.227.121] while receiving the initial server greeting)
root@mail.siubeen.com

-- 4 Kbytes in 1 Request.

im not sure what it means hehe but ya I tried sending an email from my server to hotmail and my office email it still doesnt work this is so frustrating coz everything works but sending mail.

Do you know if you mail system is using postfix? Fedora uses sendmail by default, and you need to change with system-switch-mail (or a command similar to that) to set your various environment.

yes it should be running Postfix because sendmail isnt on and before I ran a command something like 'switch-mail-system' or something to change my default MTA.

What happens if you send mail from the command line using the mail command?

Have you sorted your logging yet?

Is anything else logging - eg to messages? You may need to restart syslog

ok i tried sending mail using mail command line and i restarted syslog. The logging seems to work again and this is what I got for sending the email at the terminal.

Mar 11 23:01:15 mail postfix/pickup[21121]: 1BD6B540089: uid=504 from=<kary>
Mar 11 23:01:15 mail postfix/cleanup[21178]: 1BD6B540089: message-id=<20080311150115.1BD6B540089@mail.siubeen.com>
Mar 11 23:01:15 mail postfix/qmgr[21122]: 1BD6B540089: from=<kary@mail.siubeen.com>, size=312, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
Mar 11 23:01:16 mail postfix/smtp[21180]: 1BD6B540089: to=<dj_gareth@hotmail.com>, relay=mx2.hotmail.com[65.54.244.168]:25, delay=1.5, delays=0.02/0.01/0.82/0.68, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 <20080311150115.1BD6B540089@mail.siubeen.com> Queued mail for delivery)

Mar 11 23:01:16 mail postfix/qmgr[21122]: 1BD6B540089: removed
Mar 11 23:01:23 mail dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<kary>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, lip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, secured
Mar 11 23:01:23 mail dovecot: IMAP(kary): Disconnected: Logged out

and i didn't recieve any email at the hotmail account wut so ever still. So i tried using the REPLY option again in Squirrel webmail and my hotmail account recieved the email. This is what it shows on the log for the REPLY process. Just pasting it so you could see if there we're something different between the 2 logs.

Mar 11 23:03:47 mail postfix/qmgr[21122]: 7AF01540089: from=<kary@localhost.siubeen.com>, size=994, nrcpt=1 (queue active)

Mar 11 23:03:47 mail dovecot: IMAP(kary): Connection closed
Mar 11 23:03:47 mail dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<kary>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, lip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, secured
Mar 11 23:03:47 mail dovecot: IMAP(kary): Disconnected: Logged out

Mar 11 23:03:48 mail postfix/smtp[21235]: 7AF01540089: to=<dj_gareth@hotmail.com>, relay=mx2.hotmail.com[65.54.245.40]:25, delay=1.5,
delays=0.04/0.01/0.79/0.64, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 <26097.125.215.227.123.1205247827.squirrel@www.siubeen.com> Queued mail for delivery)
Mar 11 23:03:48 mail postfix/qmgr[21122]: 7AF01540089: removed

--

ok the difference I only spotted was the email where its FROM is different in the 2. If i use REPLY the email from is : username@localhost.siubeen.com

and if i use terminal or COMPOSE new email the address FROM is username@mail.siubeen.com

so i tried changing the $myhostname to localhost.siubeen.com in main.cf but .... it still doesnt work..
ARGH this is frustrating.

Sorry, but I just realised I madea mistake in post 3 - I meant to query your setting of myorigin (which whould really be the default unless you have a particular reason for changing it)

Came through fine.

Sounds like a hotmail issue, which is probably reverse DNS
