Smile Performance counters for linux while running load test for java application on linux

Hello,

I'm looking for options/tools where I can get server performance counters for Linux OS (having Java application on it). For windows based platforms, we have PerfMon that provides this data. I'm looking for a similar tool for Linux platform java apps. Could you please help me in identifying the best options to get the performance related data like Perfmon?

Thanks,
NR

What specific performance monitors are you looking for? You might want to look at top, vmstat, iostat, mpstat, and sar just to give a few examples. If you want detailed hardware-level performance counters, you might want to look at things like Papi or Tau. Intel also has some pay-for tools (e.g. Vtune). However, the latter group is more focused on high performance computing applications written in C, C++, or Fortran; I'm not sure how good the Java support is. I'm not familiar with Perfmon, so I'm not sure if these tools will do everything you require, but it's a place to start.

What I was looking for to measure the system performance while running the load tests on the web applications it host. I have looked at the SAR command and it provides pretty much good data we need. Also, having the kSar kit to convert SAR output to graphs was very helpful. Thanks!
