patching kernel

Hi! I'm trying to patch my 2.6.11.3 kernel to 2.6.11.6. I downloaded the 2.6.11.4, 2.6.11.5, 2.6.11.6 and applied them respectively. I did a 'make oldconfig' then compiled it. But when I installed it, it installed a kernel with version 2.6.11.3 (as seen in grub). Isn't it supposed to change kernel version after applying a patch? I think the version is in the version.h file. do I have to manually change the version?

Now I hear you need all the patches up to 2.6.11.6. So I'm hearing 2 different ways so to avoid all the trouble download the full 2.6.11.6 source.

Run uname -a to see what kernel you're running. You have to edit Grub for your new kernel, Grub isn't going to edit itself. It sounds to me like you didn't edit Grub yet.

during patching, I got messages lik e reverse something detected. it asked me to apply anyway or apply -R. The default was N. So I chose N. Is this normal?

After patching, the file version.h still has the same version number. Shouldn't it change that? Because 'make install' uses that version number.
