What version of Firefox are you using? I'm using FFx version 33 in Ubuntu 14.04 and it's definitely Edit->Preferences.

In the newer version of firefox, if you have the icon menu it will show as a gear image labeled Preferences

Right-click on empty space of search bar and check the box for the menu bar then all of your options such as File, Edit, View will be available to you.

If you do not see the Menu Bar (File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools Help), either right-click at the top of the browser and select Menu Bar, or hit Control + F to see it and select Edit > Preferences.
