Only root access in USB harddrive in mandrake 10 O

Mandrake did theese lines in fstab:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb1 vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/usb2 vfat defaults 0 0

as root I'm not allowed to change access rights on /mnt/usb1 (or...2)
I can if I unmount them first, but next time I boot, they are back to root only access.

How do I get them mounted so I have user write access?

Thanks for a tip

file transfer dies after a few GB

Thanks for the tip - I got the thing running now, but when I copy some data, it dies out after a few GB.

This happens both when doing it with Rsync and with Konqueror - maybe the USB interface isn't completely mature yet - or could other things be wrong?
