NVidia Geforce2MX400 + 3D Acceleration

I recently decided to start working out how Linux worked.. so I downloaded RH8, all 5 cd's at work. Started up fine, it probed and decided that my graphics card was a geforce2 (generic) fine I thought.. then I realised that it wasn't fully using the card. So I downloaded the kernel and GLX stuff off the NVidia site. Much messing around later.. I got it to at least start X again. It starts up, shows the NVidia logo.. everything was good I thought.. but I can't enable 3d acceleration and the card is still as Geforce2 (generic). How do I get the card to work properly? I presume I am missing something..
