Angry 3d acceleration help with Nvidia drivers

So here's my problem. I use SuSE 8.2 Pro, Nvidia Geforce 4 ti4200 128mb, Samtron 96BDF monitor, 750mhz athlon cpu.

I installed the Nvidia drivers sucessfully after a long time of reading man pages and the sort. I used the script sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run --kernel-name=2.4.20-4GB-athlon to install it, and everything went fine. No errors or anything. So after I installed the drivers, I went into SaX2 and enabled 1600x1200 mode, 16 bit colors, and enabled 3d acceleration. I clicked finish and the such, and then tested my new settings. The new resolution and color mode worked fine, but the 3d acceleration. I recieved an error message saying
_________________________________________________
(EE) NVIDIA (0) : *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
_________________________________________________

So being stupid, I clicked ok and then finalized the settings without testing again. Then when I tried to startup in init 5 mode, it went to text only. I sort of expected this, so I immedietly switched to init 3 and ran SaX 2. I disabled 3d acceleration. I just can't figure out how to get 3d acceleration working!! I have included a copy of my XF86Config

TIA for any help

Dr. Landluver

I just tried that and it didn't work. After I changed the 'nv' to 'nvidia', I opened up SaX2, removed my video card that had the nv drivers, and added the same video card with the nvidia drivers. I still can't enable 3d acceleration and have it work though.

ok, a couple more things to try, first run SuSEconfig from the root prompt, then reboot the machine and enter the bios setup, make sure you are assigning an irq to the video card, also check that plug and play is off.

Ok. My Vid card was already assigned to an irq (11) plug and play (assuming you meant OS) is disabled. Any other ideas? I'm really stuck here.

Thanks for your help so far too.

in the modules section move > load 'glx' to the top of the list(shouldn't matter, but mine is that way). save, exit, and at this point i would drop to init 3, cd to the driver and install again, without the --kernel 2.4. blah bit at the end.jump back to init 5 to see if there is any improvement.

this may be a stupid question, but did you get the files that are built for suse...cause nvidia has a seperate package for that distro?

The only SuSE specific drivers I saw were for 8.1 and below. I tried everything you tried rshaw, but when I try to go back to init 5 after installing, it brings me to text only mode. It just can't handle the nvidia drivers. Also, another thing, my default is the 'nv' drivers. I mean that if I want to enable 3d acceleration, I have to remove my gfx card from SaX2 and then add it again for it to recognize the new drivers. When I try to go into init 5 it does this automatically.

Dr. Landluver

P.S. If it matters, I can only install the Nvidia drivers with my kernel specified.

I tried doing the update, but I got an error. After that I just tried to move it into tmp and did the rest of the instructions. It still didn't work. Any more suggestions?

Thanks

I've already posted my sad story, but I'm also crashing my machine each time I try "nvidia" in the x config file.
