no sound, only noise(ubuntu)

I can still play music and videos with mplayer. But some sound (e.g in firefox, the login sound) disappeared. When I test sound in System->
->Preferences->Sounds, I only get little noise if I choose ALSA. But It works well with OSS.
What's wrong?
