Networking - can an XP PC see my Linux PC?

This is my 2nd day of Linux. I access the Internet over a commercial network. With XP I turn off MS Networking and only have IP/TCP and PPPoE enabled and this (along with cancelling file sharing) keeps my XP machine pretty secure.

At this time I have Windows and Linux installed and am accessing data for OpenOffice from my XP partition for Linux sessions.

Most others on the network run XP. However can they see my Linux PC and can they access my XP partitions as I can? If they can how do I stop this?

If you haven't set up samba server, which isn't by default, and activated shared directories no. No one on the network can access your windows partition(and any other).

Did you set up the network settings or someone else?

Cheers,

I configured the Network settings myself. I didn't install Samba, as part of the initial setup, so I guess I'm safe. Having just started the migration from XP the Network access was a potential security hazard!

Thanks for your help.
