Open Kppp and check your modem's port speed settings (set it to 115200). It's been over a year since I used Kppp but I remember there being a way to adjust it. Poke around in it until you find it, then set it to 115200.
That 115200 is the serial port speed and should not affect the connection speed. You may want to check your phone lines and such. Does it do the same thing in windows with the same puter and modem?
It usually gets the fastest speed it can and mantaine a signal.
