Need login to Fedora 15 from terminal, cannot log in to GUI because of modification

So I made a huge mistake following advice from a friend on how to change my username on Fedora.

I changed my username in /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd, renamed my user folder in /home to the same username and then saved everything and restarted.

When I got to the login screen, it still had my old username there. I tried logging into it but I received an error. So I clicked OK on an error box after the screen turned black and went back to the login screen and clicked "other". I then tried to log into the new username but it had the same error (the error included my old home folder). I also tried "root", but it gave me an authentication error.

I want to log in from a terminal or something as root in order to fix it. But how? I can't access my accounts. I tried accessing it from Windows but apparently a LVM partition is inaccessible.

What should I do?

Did you use usermod http://linux.die.net/man/8/usermod ?
That's better than doing it manually.
