way to log on to wireless network in terminal (no GUI) mode

Hello,
I have been troubleshooting some graphics problems in my Ubuntu 9.04 machine, which result in my being dumped to the terminal after bootup. I am comfortable with using the terminal, but I don't know how to log on to my wireless network. The config tool in the GUI makes it really easy, but I can't seem to figure out the console commands.

Is there any encryption in place? What type?

To simply connect to an unencrypted AP, you would run a command like:

Code:
iwconfig DEVICE mode managed essid SSID
That would tell the given WLAN device to go into client mode and connect to the network with the given SSID. After that you would need to assign TCP/IP information, either manually or more likely though DHCP.

What if it is encrypted? I think it is using WPA/WPA2.
