Need help on where to get development libs and help on compiling in YDL 6.0

I'm very new to Linux, and struggling alot, can anyone push me in the right direction to learn more about doing things in Linux, and most importantly, I really need answers to what I said in the topic title.

Anyone? I don't know what I need exactly to compile, I get errors every time I try, and it's getting annoying.
