Angry My kernel doesn't shrink

I'm building a boot floppy on RH7.3. I've compiled my kernel ignoring as many options as I could understand. I even unchecked some of the options that I knew are in my computer, like some I20 support? On compiling my kernel, the final message is 'System size 482KB'. But command 'ls -s vmlinux' gives me 1120 blocks of 1KB? While doing 'lilo -v -C bdlilo.conf -r /mnt' it gives a message 'Fatal: Kernel image too big'. .Config is:

use make bzImage

then use that file instead of vmlinux

it will be in arch/i386/boot/ in the source tree
