MSN woes

When I got this computer GAIM worked fine. and it still does except for MSN. it connects for about one minute and then disconnects me.

the Debug log says:
Quote:
account: Disconnecting account 0x97d8b50
connection: Disconnecting connection 0x9ac3420
server: removing NOP
msn: destroy httpconn (0x994e4d0)
connection: Destroying connection 0x9ac3420
I looked at how to upgrade GAIM thinking tht might help but I seem to be lost on how to do that.

I tried to install MSN with WINE but got an error aboutnot being able to detect Internet explorer.

So then I thought, since I use mIRC (also with WINE) that I could just use one of the MSN add ons. but no matter which one I use I get ewrrors. the most common one is:
* No such Com 'auth' open (line 15, msnauth2kxp.mrc)

the password i'm entering is correct since I can login to passport from the website.

out of pure desperation I tried to use the web messenger... I got "Your web browser is not supported by this version of MSN Web Messenger"

I really don't care HOW I connect to MSN messenger. I don't need the web came or file sharing.. just basic chatting. Can someone walk this newbie through how to install MSN in one form or another?

i suspect that msn may have changed the name of their server or something....

right so which distribution are you using?

you probably just need to upgrade GAIM.

you could also install aMSN....

What version of gaim are you using? Give some more info bud. I use gaim fine for MSN so it's something to do with your setup, not gaim.

Sorry GAIM is version 1.3.0-1/fc4

I have Fedora Cora 4

GAIM was working perfectly for a couple months and then one day msn just started disconnecting on me. I didn't change anything cause I don't know how. LOL if MSN changed the name of their server.. how do I fix that?

as someone posted above, try aMSN - it's an MSN clone, and it's working fine for my children....(but then again, gaim is also working fine....)

i would start by updrading msn to the latest version in the past. I have had the same problem before - i,e msn stops working. upgrading gaim might well fix it.

gaim is now on version 1.5 i believe....

Yup, upgrade. The MSN protocol probably changed since Gaim 1.3.

Try upgrading to Fedora core 5. The newest version of Gaim will be with it. Or just upgrade Gaim. I think the newest is version 2.0.

MSN was upgraded to a newer version not too long ago. The old protocols are probably installed in Gaim 1.3, so an upgrade seems to be the only way to fix this. Or try aMSN. You may have luck with it. I was unable to get it to install on Fedora Core 4, but you may be able to do so.

Gaim 2.0 is still in beta, the current stable version is 1.5.0 which works fine.

Gaim works fine. Upgrade to 1.5 and see if it solves the problem. Or that could just be a firewall issue. Please try to upgrade and report if it works.
Or you can use aMSN, which support webcam, inkdraw and nudges. Works fine.
Kopete is another option. You need the latest svn version to have the webcam work properly with the latest MSN protocol.
You can as well install msn 6.2 or msn 7.0 with wine, but you need to install internet explorer first. Read this how to : http://wiki.winehq.org/MSN_Messenger_webcam_support
Note : there are several other msn clients which can work. Simplest is to upgrade gaim.
