In trying to access the PC's floppy disk drive, this message is returned:
"mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device"

The PC is an older Dell PC with a reformatted HD (no Windows OS at all). Only Ubuntu 7.04 is installed as the OS. I can happily use an external drive for transfering data to the new Ubuntu system.

Advice on how to resolve the above issue is welcomed.

What is the exact command you issued when trying to mount the drive?

No command was used.

I was trying to access the floppy disk via the File Browser which shows in its sidebar Floppy Disk as one of the items available. I simply clicked on "Floppy Disk" and the drive's light flashed on and then an error message box popped up saying "Cannot mount volume. Unable to mount the volume." Further clicking on "Details", I get the answer "mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device".

Could it be that not having a floppy disk in the drive would be the cause of the error message?

Yes, if you have no floopy disk in the drive then it won't mount aka giving you that message. Try inserting a floopy and mounting it you should get more sucessful result. If you still get an error after post here
