Question problem mounting a floppy disk

Hi

I am very new to LINUX. So please dont mind if it is a trivial Q.

I am trying to mount my floppy using the command
mount /dev/floppy /mnt/floppy
error is "only root can do it"

Then I log in as root and repeat the same command
this time, error is "special device /dev/floppy does not exist"

Then I typed
#ln -s /dev/fd0 /dev/floppy
#mkdir /floppy
#mount /dev/floppy /floppy

Error is
"/dev/floppy: Invalid Argument
mount:you must specify the filesystem type"

I also tried with rightclick on mouse on desktop but same error.

Help me!

Is the floppy formatted? You cannot mount an unformatted floppy since the devices you mount need a file system on them.

If it already has a file system on it, try passing the file system type on the command line: mount -t fat /dev/floppy /floppy if it's a Win/DOS floppy, or use ext2 if it's formatted using ext2fs.

Question problem mounting a floppy disk

Thanks for the help!
I didnot help much!

I typed cat /etc/fstab

my settings are

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0

Does this setting have anything to do with the mounting problem?
if so, then how to reset and what to reset?

Btw, the floppy has files copied from a windows machine, they are tar.gz files.

Thanks,

I did this:

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

then I went to
/mnt/floppy

and there it is!
