- What Ubuntu version?
- What kernel version? (Google for 'sitehoronix.com +kernel +power' to see what I mean)
- What Desktop Environment do you use?
- What services are running?
- Are the laptop-mode-tools and gnome-power-manager packages installed?

I have always had this problem for sometime now. I remember seeing this article. Linux power regression.

I think this was expected to be fixed in the newer kernel (3.1 or later I think). I am not sure about the status though.

Just as unspawn asked, what kernel version are you using?
Code:
 uname -r
