Currently I have Redhat 7.2 installed but I have the option to upgrade to either M9 or R8. What are their relative strenghts/weaknesess? I hear Mandrake is more user friendly but Redhat seems to be preffered by most. Why?
from my own personal experience
mandrake 9 is a lot more multimedia friendly, it comes with xine and doesn't require much to be DVD compatible
the install is easy in both
it's really a personal choice, like which type of jeans do you prefer, or which car do you like
RedHat8 seems to be more "corporate" and is preferred in those type of settings
Mandrake is the way to go I think, if you want to choose between those two. RedHat is getting more of a mind of its own: weak KDE support, no longer mp3 support, higher system requirements, etcetera.

salparadise: please take your evangelism elsewhere, this is not a religious forum. Or should I add to my sig: Heil Thor!
The guy is free to have a religious opinion. He's not flaming nor solicitng and he did give a clear response. I'm sure his jedi mind tricks won't work on you anyway so just let him be.
btw sifu-rusty if you just sniff around the site you will see this same quesion a gazillion times, check it out.
Sure everybody has the right to have a religious opinion, I'm not denying anybody those rights. But when I come here to help people with Linux, I don't need to be reminded of all the hurt I suffered from Christianity. I find his sig offensive and I kindly told him so. He doesn't seem to return the kindness. Well, before I start flaming, I'd better stop.
I find it OFFENSIVE too!!! But by whining about it just encourages jerks like that.
Personally, I feel Jesus was nothing more than a martyr! (and I'm SURE I'll hear a LOT more about it for saying so too BUT DON'T DO IT HERE!!! -- read on). The thing that seems to escape the myriad of morons who post junk like that is that Jesus's martyrdom has passed! Furthermore, anyone who "believes" such garbage as is in the "Great Book of Fairy Tales" also known as the "King James Bible," would also be inclined to "believe" nearly ANY fairy tale (Hint: Paul Bunion was a REAL person but his achievements have been greatly exagerated and that was a LOT more recent than Jesus's exploits). Unfortunately, these "believer's" are so convinced or mindwashed in their fairy tale that they have to tell everyone about it to the point of being an obnoxous ass about it or worse! This behavior is also quite hypocritical since the very doctrine they support says to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (aka. "the golden rule") but that's NOT what they pratice! This very same mindset has also motivated the death's of a lot of innocent people throughout the centuries which is perhaps the ultimate in contradiction and in my book that's EVIL!!! Unless this dimwitt is about to kill or do something stupid, don't waste your time complaining (I suppose I should take my own advice on that one). He's not really hurting anyone and only showing his true ignorance by spouting his belief's in an area that couldn't be more off track -- anyone with common sense can see that. He MAY be a very inteligent person where Linux is concerned, but NOT someone I'd want to know (even if he were Bill Gates and this was all about MS Windows) since he has no regard for other people's feelings (pretty "un-christian" too). You may be asking, what are we, as "thinking" people, to do? And the answer is there isn't much you can do except NOT give him the audience he "needs." He's probably too socially retarded that an audience here is just what he wants instead of getting outside and talking to live human beings or going to a more appropriate chat room/board. There are much worse things in the world to be bent on so it's really not a big deal anyway. All the same, it's OFFENSIVE! And I agree it doesn't belong here. Too bad our moderator doesn't see it that way; then again, there may be more going on that we don't know about too.
And now that an opposing view point has been made perhaps we ALL can keep this "crap" (religion) in the toilet where it belongs?
As far as a good Linux distribution goes I say Slackware! But the question was for Red Hat or Mandrake and if those are the ONLY choices to be made then I say go with Mandrake. I don't want to write a book and say why since this is really just post-script dribble to help get back on track...
I installed Red Hat 8.0 and had numerous problems with anaconda (the installation program). When I finally got it installed, I really liked it. Then I had to reinstall, and ran into the same problems, so I went with Mandrake 9.0 which I am also really happy with. It's pretty and user friendly. Installed the first time.
And I'm an Athiest, but I'm not offended by religion. As long as someone isn't preaching, I say let their freedom of speach stand.
Just to throw in something on our ;little side debate. There's no one who can say evolution is completely true or creation is completely true (for humanity), unless you can honestly say that "you were there" when the world was created. When I stood over Darwin's grave at Westminister Abbey, all I know for sure is that he's very dead, and what's left of his body has been decomposing for a while....
How can you guys rip salparadise and call him offensive? He asked a simple question. He never made any comments about his faith...sigs are are there to describe the person. He never made any comments about you as a person or prejudged you guys. You are the ones with the closed minds...you say you don't want to know a guy like that. You'd probably say he's closed minded and selfish and religious brewha thats going to judge you. Looks like you beat him to the punch. Way to humbly help someone out.
