Linux and Ram?

I opened up the system options...And i noticed it is showing i have 495.8 MB of Ram..When i have 512 MB of Ram?? Is this showing the current running Ram? and if so its showing 498.5 MB as Linux uses some of it for the OS,or is this display showing the installed amount?
Thanks

Your onboard video is taking 16mb, it has nothing to do with Linux.

Good to see you around
Thanks for the help you always offer.
I received your email, and thank you for always providing such good advice.
I am attempting to be more clear and concise, and just taking things slower and easier..
I am sure that when you were a Linux virgin you were as i am,very eager and wanting to learn, but a little frustrated when learning as things don't always go as planned..Such is life
I solved all of my issues and learned a great deal!
Thanks...

Received my email? Couldn't be me, must have been someone else from these forums.

I started out with a boxed version of Mandrake 6.5, that was a long time ago, I still have the books from it, even though they are useless today.
