256 ram shows as 183284 total ram
hello! I have 2 sticks CLEARLY MARKED as 128 pc100 ram installed in my HP Pavillion N3250, yet $ free and $ top show my total ram to be 183284! How can this be? Even the BIOS says something similar. Any thoughts on this? One stick is HP and the other is EDGE. THANX!

have you tried each stick individually to see if one of them is reporting the wrong size?

Do you have an onboard video chip that might be pinching some system memory for itself?

Shouldn't affect what the BIOS reports cs-cam.
I'm with santaliqueur - sounds like the OP was scammed,or one of the chips is broken.

I tested different RAM in both slots and I fear the problem lies in the motherboard. I have 2 RAM slots in this HP Pavillion N3250 laptop.
When I plug one stick of 128mb RAM in slot#1, the BIOS reports: Base=640, Extended=121856, Reserved=384, Video=8192, Total RAM=131072
The same stick, when plugged into slot#2, shows: Base=640, Extended=56320, Reserved=384, Video=8192, Total RAM=65536
I don't know what, if anything, can be done about this. Any thoughts? THANX!

nope I did not get the same results!
Well I tried the other stick (Edge) and it worked fine in both slots- So then I plugged the HP RAM into the first slot (the one that it worked in) and now $ top shows 248308 total ram! (BIOS showed similar)
Sooo, is my HP stick going bad, or is it only supposed to work in one slot and not the other?
THANX for all the help!
