I've just downloaded LimeWire for linux. While installing I was told to install Java and/or get VM (?Virtual Machine?). Can someone guide me on how to set up LimeWire or any other GUI P2P client? I've downloaded the j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586.rpm package and tried to install it. Still, no luck. Don't know where to start figuring out what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated.

ignore limewire for now, the java side is far too much trouble than it's worth for most new users, and often ends in tehm leaving linux altogehter....

to install *anything* from source, you need a compiler. install gcc from your distro cd's. alternatively get an rpm:

acutally, i'd be interested to know why you and anyone else actually headed toward limewire comapred to the dozens of other clietns? is it because you used it on windows?

I've used Gnutella and eDonkey (I think thats the name) and I found LimeWire my favourite out of them all. I seem to get better search results and better speeds. Never had any issues connecting to the LimeWire network like I did with other clients.

LimeWire because I used it on windows. In fact I actually use Shareaza and WinMX but LimeWire seemed to have a Linux version so I decided to give it a shot.

I am having issues with Lime Wire also. I am not going to switch programs, I am going to use Lime Wire. There is nothing you can do about it except help me with my issues. If I give up, I won't learn anything. Well here it is...

What the hell does this mean? I have what I think is the latest release of JAVA RT (1.5?). Maybe it is not compatible? Whatever, Windows is easier to understand. OS X is prettier too. FYI: I'm using Red Hat 9. Thanks for any help.

When I used mandrake to install Java I had to install it via the console

rpm -Uh name of java rpm here.rpm (installed as root)

this worked. Then when I wanted to install Limewire I had to edit where my JavaVM was so I went into LimeWire found the line that was asking for the VM type in the location and I was downloading in no time. Although I would suggest using GTK-Gnutella not as friendly but performs much better. Hope that helps.

for me limewire was the easiest to install on suse 9.1, i just downloaded the bin file and double clicked on it, the install was gui based and flawless like windows( never had to touch the terminal).
of all the software i have ever installed on linux, i think limewire was the easiest. maybe because java was already there on my machine. so it surprises me why limewire install is so complicated for other people/distros.

and just to add...limewire is the best p2p around...its fast and theres absolutely no difference between the windows version and the linux one.

How did you edit installation parameters for LimeWire, inescapeableus? Also I type which java and I get /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/bin/java. Mean java installed right?

Ok. So gnutella and qtella didn't work for me. I'm gonna keep trying. And, yes, I aint giving up either. However, I did download Azureus and that worked for me. I'm cool with torrents for now. For anyone still searching, Azureus is a good. Me happy. Respect.

I too want Limewire on my FC2 machine. I think I have Java installed, I just don't know for sure. For some reason loading Java on Linux is equivalent to bio chemisty engineering degree at MIT. They need to make this fairly basic because it is way too complicated for some. I am not a Gentoo user so I guess I just need some help.

How can I tell if I have Java working? If I go to Applications > Preferences ... I can see to Java icons in the list...?

Any idea how I can verify if I installed Java correctly & why I find 2 icons rather than one?
I just downloaded the file called "LimeWireLinux.bin", what is my next step?
