What is the filename and what command did you use to uncompress it?

The file is perhaps incomplete, perhaps corrupted during the download. Checking the tarball's md5sum, if possible, will verify this, or maybe even just checking the size of the file you have downloaded against what it should be. Also, ensure that you downloaded the file in binary mode.
