KDE Start Error

when i try to start kde up i get this error:

xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
xrdb: Can't open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: Shutting down...
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.

I guess you are starting kde from the commandline using
startkde

It won't work if X is not up and running already. What you can is
startx {path to startkde}

so if startkde is in /usr/local/kde/bin, it would be
startx /usr/local/kde/bin/startkde

you could also place
startkde
in your ~/.xinitrc

OK. I think people will need some info to help you.

What is your distro?
How did you install kde?
How are you trying to staring kde?
Does startx give you anything? If so, what?
