I am using the standard desktop that mageia comes with, I have found the answer to my question however, simply copying the URL of the site I want to have a desktop icon for, then on my desktop right click, select link to url then a pop up window comes up and I can rename the icon in the first field, and put the url in the second field, click enter and the icon shows up on the desktop...solved
