Smile Internet connection problem with Ubuntu studio 7.10...

Dear Sirs or madams,
This is my first post at this site,my name is Steve Rickards , i have a dual boot computer with xp2 on one Hard drive and Ubuntu studio 7.10 on the other. I wanted the studio Ubuntu for recording and composing my own music.
I have tried for the last three months to connect to the internet with a Dlink DSL-G624T modem, my isp provider is Virginmedia through the phoneline it is broadband, works great with xp2 but nothing with Ubuntu ;-( .I have done, pppoeconf in root, and i keep getting this,
"Access concentrator of your provider did not respond" any ideas plz ?
I have also put in the terminal "ifconfig pppo ",that comes out ," Error device not found" also,Error while getting interface flags, No such device !!! strange ;-)It seems that Ubuntu can not find the modem ?I have only one ethernet socket on the motherboard, may be i can at an ether net card and fit it into a pci slot, maybe that would work ?
I am lost at the moment where to go with this i have read many articles that are having problems with 7.10 but i need the internet to upgrade to 8.04 and find that downloading iso files and burning them to disc and trying to get it to open on Ubuntu is getting me confused as most of the files do not want to upload to this os,any ideas why this is ?
I hope someone can show me some light so i can get on with connecting to the net,
Many thanks for reading,
Take care always, Steve Rickards England uk.

You shouldn't need 'pppoe' to connect to the DLink modem. Once it is initially configured via a web browser, it should connect to your ISP on its own.

Can you confirm that the modem had been configured and that it automatically connects to your ISP even with no computer connected to it? The little green light indicating an ADSL connection should light up and stay lit.

Are you connecting the computer to the modem via an ethernet cable, or are you using the wireless?

Dear Sir or madams,
I have found out that i need to disable my IPv6 in my Ubuntu 7.10 studio. As i have done this in the Firefox web browser and i get a connection but nothing else is working. So I have looked at Ubuntu website to see the way to disable Ipv6,it says, open a terminal as root, done that, put in ,gksudo gedit/etc/modprobe.d/aliases. nothing happens ;-( any ideas or is there another way to do this ?
Many thanks,Steve Rickards ;-)

Dear Sir or madams,
Can anyone help ?
I have a problem with IPV6,i need to disable this to get a connection to the rest of my Os ubuntu 7.10 studio.I have a connection with firefox web browser but nothing else ;-(
I open a terminal and put in /etc/modprobe.d aliases ,i get this,Permission Denied, can you tell me why that is ? I have tried this, gksudo gedit/etc/modprobe.d/aliases i get a patch to enter my password so i do this, then nothing else happens, why should it not take me to the list ? or should i enter something else to get the list up? so i can disable IPV6 for good ;-)
THanks for reading my post,i hope you all do not get this problem if you do,i think the guys at Ubuntu should look at this and solve it ASAP ;-)I have been told that No one uses IPV6 yet or will do for a long time ,lol .
Take care,be safe,Steve Rickards...;-)
