Ubuntu internet connection problem

Hi,
I am connecting to internet through cable connection, I am using also a router, I can connect to internet with Windows and Pardus(linux based OS), I start to use Ubuntu 5.10, and I can ping my internet providers address(192.168.1.1) but can't connect to any other page, what should I do for repairing the connection? Thanks.

is dns working okay

do

"sudo nslookup www.google.com"

if that doesnt work then there is a problem....

yes I try to conect with dhcp at least I should connect with dhcp

do the other OS's still work ok or are you only using ubuntu now?

sounds like your isp is having a problem with its dns, or more likely the settings are wrong on your dhcp server (a modem/firewall thing??)

Well I am usin g cable modem and distribujte it with a accesspoint( router) for my desktop and laptop on Windows and Pardus another linux based OS connection works fine but in Ubuntu it just doesn't work

hmm, wierd. have you tried a static address instead?

not sure why that would be.

did you do something wierd in netconfig?

no I didn't do anything, it just seem I am connected to net but can't ping anything different than 192.168.1.1

what is the output of "sudo netstat -nr"

check your gateway...

personally i would try to reconfigure networking on that system, re run the scripts - go to ubuntu forums to check it out

I saw that you said you could only ping 192.168.1.1

Do you have a Linksys router by any chance?

I do, and that is the default IP for their routers. It seems to me that you're pinging the router. But I can't be sure.

I'm currently running windows, trying to find a way to get online with linux.

I had a problem connecting using the router as well. Look on your wireless router and find the make/model and look for the manual online.
Also, open your web browser on the computer to which the router is wired and enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. If this is a Linksys, as I assume it is, a login box will pop up. Leave the username field blank and enter "admin" as the password. You will be brought to the router's configuration "site", you might call it. On the first page will be fields in which to type your internet login information. There are several types of connection to choose from (call your ISP to find out which you are). choose the correct one and enter the username and password you use to log in. It should then work, along with any other computers receiving a signal from the router.
