Installing: ALONE with out stupid XP

I have looked on google, and linux.com ... and only found install guides for running linux (ubuntu specificlly) within windows, but I want it to run alone. I used the search on here (searched |-|install, windows|-| to keep it minimal) and didn't find anything. any threads you can recommend or sites with a guide/install faq with this info would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if this is the proper place for this question, but I hope it is. As far as details about what I am running and whatnot so you can have a bit of insight into what I am working with:

1) System - Fujitsu Lifebook S-series(laptop) 1.7ghz centrino processor (intel) with 512RAM with windows XP pro. (SP2)

2) LINUX - I am D/Ling ubuntu 10 desktop - from linux.com, and saving the .ISO to a 2Gb data stick. I do have a dvd/cd drive with burning ability, and burning software if I need to burn to cd instead.

3) FILES - tHE ONLY THINGS i REALLY WANT TO KEEP ARE MY VIDEO GAME EMULATORS, AND A CD OR 2 i HAVE ON wINAMP. i HAVE BACKED THESE UP ONTO cd AND HAVE NO PROBLEM IF i MUST WIPE MY DRIVE (i WOULD LIKE TO AVOID THIS IF POSSIBLE, BUT YOU GOTTA DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO).

iF THIS IS ALREADY POSTED SOMEWHERE ELSE i APOLOGIZE, i'M KINDA RUNNING ALL OVER THE INTER-WEB LOOKING FOR THIS INFO, AND PROBABLY SKIPPED WHAT i AM LOOKING FOR IN MY RUSH LOL. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE.
(Sorry for the caps, my font is all caps, so I can never tell)
