In Fedora 8 the Gnome Desktop gets installed even though I unselect it and select KDE

When I install Fedora 8, it allows you to "Customize" your system. Then you get a screen that lets you select or un-select software. Among the things you can choose are "Desktops."

I uncheck "Gnome" and check the box that selects "KDE." But Gnome always gets installed. This wouldn't be such a big problem since you can use "Add or Remove Software" to change desktops. But whenever I do it this way, it breaks my sound system. None of the music players work and I can't use my CD/DVD drives.

Everything works in Gnome.

I think it would be alright if KDE got installed during installation. Can somebody please tell how to make this happen?

Thank you,

royeo

This is normal, there's a bug you can choose whatever you want.
Gnome will be installed.
You've to install KDE afterwards using Repository or better use Fedora 9 it's fixed there.

Custome KDE only

If you really want kde only to be installed in your system
what i have done is during installation when asked for workstation or server unclick all mean not install anything but bottom there chose
customize

the problem is you really need to know the software need to use for kde only but if you understand the software you need ( run with kde ) should be good then your installation might fix to less than 2 gb

if you accidentally chose software which is required gnome then gnome will be installed , so avoid that

its work for me this way , so my system only use kde for now is kde3.5

i have use fedora 9 but revert back to fedora 8 because there something i not satisfied with kde4, i want to wait fedora 10

5 cent from me , cheers
