I can only play music cds as root

Hi,

I tried searching for this, but could not find it. I recently got the dvd player to work and it plays dvds for both, the regular user and root.

But, it will not play cds, only as root. It is /dev/dvd mounted as /dvd and device the device is hda.

How do I change the permission to play cds as normal users on my dvd drive?

Thanks.

#chmod 666 /dev/hda*

I wouldn't change the permissions on the device itself unless you really need to. Did you add yourself to the audio user group?

Yes, I am in the audio group. I looked under /etc/group and my username is next to it.

For some reason my cdroms are hda / hdb instead of hdc (my hds are hdc / hdd) So, it is backwards. Doesn't make too much of a difference to me though.

It certainly does to overall performance if you have cd as primary master

Did you chmod"ed" 666 your drive?

Should I change it back? How do I change it back to what it supposed to be?

I will try to chmod it the cdrom now

[edit]
I fixed it. hds are now my primary master thanks for the tip. BTW- how much of a performance increase do you think it would be?

I got a kernel panic now because it doesn't know where my hds are, so I believe I should modify fstab which I am going to try right now.

Thanks
