[SOLVED] How to find, identify, write to or load a driver from CD ROM to LINUX UBUNTU 11.04

Installed LINUX UBUNTU 11.04 completely replacing Windows 7.
Bought Sabrent Wireless-G 802.11G PCI Adapter card with LINUX driver on a mini CD. No documentation accompanied the PCI card, it is probably on the CD.

I do not have a clue on how to proceed.

I think there is a mount command but some knowledge is required on how to issue a mount.

How do I identify the CD ROM?
How can I get to Read, write and Load a driver
Where do I put the driver software
How to "load" and "unload"/remove a CD or DVD

What commands do I issue

On Ubuntu, you shouldn't have to do anything more than simply insert the CD for it to show you the contents. Manually mounting drives is something that Ubuntu has gone through great pains to remove from the user's experience.

As for the driver that is on the disc, there is really no telling if it will work with your system or not. It is probably going to be a kernel module you will have to compile yourself, which is not going to be an easy task for a new Linux user. There is also a good chance that it won't be compatible with the particular kernel you are running.

More to the point, the Internet seems to indicate this should be plug and play on a modern Linux distribution. Have you tried to simply plug it in and see what happens?

On the face of it just put the CD into the drive and a picture of a CD should come up on the desktop. Click the picture, or double click it whatever, and then read the instructions inside the CD.

Open a terminal and type lspci - this lists pci devices. See if it is mentioned, if so good sign.

I have inserted Different CDs many times into the drive, other than the drive light coming on and off nothing happened.

Your mentioning UBUNTU wants to spare the user from manually doing stuff led me to revisit UBUNTU menus and try again:

Am I missing something? Maybe because of syslog's mention of failed stuff my implementation is faulty

Please open a terminal (you should find that in the menu), type in the command

Code:

lspci

and post the output here. this way we will see which drivers are needed for that wireless card and can tell you how to install them. After that it will be much easier to fix your issue with the CD-ROM.

Merely putting a cd in the CDROM drive does nothing.

Bit odd. Try the main menu: Places > computer then click(s) on the CD drive icon and see what happens, with the CD in the drive.

Install lshw - list hardware, and post the result here.

At a quess: sudo apt-get install lshw at the terminal command line.

Newcommers always get weird problems.

If the hardware is not being picked up, the simplest thing is to put it into a different slot and see what happens.

Either you installed the Sabrent Wireless-G 802.11G PCI Adapter card wrong. Or is this a usb wireless device? Because your lspci output does not show it as installed. Mine for reference.

got to CD icon clicked got "empty" with CD in the device and with no CD in the device
tried: "install lshw" got "invalid option 'l'"

Then I went to Update manager IT WORKED (sorry I didn't take notes)
Well after all that The system needed to be restarted so I restarted.

Behold I got an Icon of the CD Success!! I need to review what transpired so I can understand what I (You) did

Great (so far) - Not fully successful.

Problem: Opened drawer inserted a CD and... NOTHING - no LINUX recognition no action resulting from placing CD in the CDROM

Objective

1) To read data contained in an inserted CD, have LINUX/UMBUTU recognize the CD by posting a CD icon on the screen and a mechanism to view and act on contents.
2) Be able to load the driver for a function (in my case a PCI Wireless LAN card) using vendor's driver software

Solution: (Part 1) Software was loaded to permit the operation of reading & recognizing a CD. This was done by issuing the following command from the terminal.

"sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk"

This loaded a whole bunch of software meeting objective 1) above. (see prior threads for a listing) Double clicking the ICON gets you into the CD and files therein.

Part 1) SOLVED!

Part 2) A new request for solution will be posted.

Driver disk from Sabrent for PCI Wireless adapter 802.11G

Inserted the vendors CD Got an ICON with the following: "WLAN_658"
Double clicking on it results in: the display of 10 icons among them are:
Acrobat reader - Autorun - manual - PCI-802G(630G) - PCI-820N
USB11G 11N-RT - USB11N/RTL8191&8188 - Autorun.inf - setup.exe - setup.ini

Double clicked on Manual
It provided Instructions to run setup.exe and select "PCI Wireless 802.11G drivers.

Well the .exe would be the installer for the Windows drivers, which will do nothing for you on Linux.

Does the documentation mention anything about the installation process for Linux?

There is a setup.ini as well when checked got:

There is also PCI802G(630G) Which may be the Driver that seems to match the PCI card I want to install clicked and got:
5 selections --of interest are LINUX, Supporting Information and RaLink_PCI.txt
first clicked on supporting information --> which listed a few operating environments but NOT LINUX
Then clicked on RaLink_PCI.txt --> select plain test translation ---nothing
Tried LINUX --> ICON with "tar.bz2" written on an ICON folder below is written "2008_0506_RT61_LINUX SoftAP_Drv1 1.3.0.tar.bz2" when selected got the following
Dialogue name: 2008_0506_RT61_SoftAP_Drv1.1.3.0.tar.bz2 [Read Only] Under Name were listed 3 items with headings:
