How to compile the Kernel with Custom Name

For example i have 2.6.14-gentoo-r5 ,how to change it to 2.6.14-xxxxxxxx.When i change it in include/linux/version.h it says this when compiling:

Quote:
CHK include/linux/version.h
UPD include/linux/version.h
And after that include/linux/version.h is with the old name?

Any help?

Try setting the "Local version", under "General Setup" in the kernel configuration.

Okay, then try changing the extraversion in the top level Makefile.
