how to check which interfacce port has cable connected

Hi

We are going to move some servers from one location to another. How to verify whether the cables are connected to the right interface port?

like one server has eth0 active and eth1 is down. now if the tech guys connect the cable on eth1 port then how to know that

Is it /sys/class/net/eth1 and look for carrier or there is a better way ?

thanks in advance

Use ifconfig and plug in one cable at a time. That really is the best way. Then maybe label them.

You don't have to plug it into the actual network if you're worried about some unintentional network talk which shouldn't happen, instead plug the interface into an unused switch where the switch is not connected to any other network, but that will terminate the cable and allow the network to come up.
