Angry how to add my new knoppix box to an existend windows LAN

hello this is my situation:

first of all, im the worst newbie and dumbest you ever find, so please bear with me.

i was able to install my knoppix 3.3 to my hard drive last night.

i connect to the internet fine from this box. (knpx box that is)

i would like my knpx box to see the windows boxes and vise.

i try running the /etc/samba/smb.conf only to het this message:

"permission denied"

even though i was logged on as root.

i tried the LinNeighborhood. to no avail.

my set up is as follows:

i connect to the internet thru cable modem

my modem goes to a hub (not a router)

and my computers connect to the hub

ip's are provided by my isp.

ip's are static.

please be really specific on your replies like i said im a little dumb.

dont send me to google or read, i think i did that enough between last night and today.

for your replies and help thank you very much.

Despite your plea, I'm going to send you to read the Knoppix Samba FAQ

You mentioned in your post that you "try running the /etc/samba/smb.conf". smb.conf is a configuration file, not an executable program. You need to edit smb.conf to specify which directories on your Knoppix box you want to share with your Windows boxes. Since the contents of your smb.conf will be specific to your particular network, you need to learn how to edit smb.conf. I suggest you search this site for "smb.conf" for examples.

My home network is completely Linux so I don't have an example for you.
