Linux box using DHCP server: trying to access it's web server from Windows

Hi, I have a web page at http://localhost:8080/ on my Linux box which I want to be able to access from a Windows 2000 machine on my LAN - using something like: http://linuxbox:8080/. I am using an ADSL router as my DHCP server, and so the actual IP my linux box is assigned varies.

Is there a way I can give the linux box a name within the LAN that a browser under Windows will be able to detect? Or is there a way I can fix the IP address and still ensure that my router accepts it?

Any help much appreciated.

PS I have checked my router. I can't get it to reserve an IP for a particular MAC.

The best way would be to set a small range of IPs for DHCP and use the rest for fixed IPs - ie:
1 = Router
10->100 = Fixed
100->200 = DHCP

If you want windows to do it by name then either add an entry to your hosts file (not much good with dhcp) or install and run the samba server on the linux box.

Hi David,

thanks for the reply. I've looked into it and I can specify the IP range the router uses to allocate IPs. Great. The next part is a bit of a newbie question, how can I go about specifying the IP address? Do I modify /etc/dhclient.conf, /etc/network/inferfaces or something completely different?

Thanks
