gcc comes with the fedora installation CD, you should be able to install from there

or
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=625780

from http://djkaos.wordpress.com/2007/12/...edora-8-guide/

4)GCC compatibility:

Fedora 8 ships and uses GCC 4.1. Some applications that were compiled with an older GCC (ex: 3.2) will require compatibility libraries

yum -y install compat-libstdc++-33 compat-libstdc++-296

For fedora 9

.el5

Code:
Installed: gcc.i386 0:4.1.2-42.el5
Seems like you are running RHEL, so the Fedora install CD won't help.
If you're running Fedora, then you have the wrong repository sneaked into your yum settings.

oops, I didn't notice you were using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. Here is a CentOS 5 support forum you can post to (100% binary compatible with RHEL5):

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i386.rpm.html
is a filelist of gcc-4.1.2-42.el5.i386.rpm
and /usr/bin/gcc is included (of course)
Are you quite sure it is installed ?
And no need to be root to test gcc !
( "" [trixbox1.local ~]# gcc "" )

Regards
