Lightbulb How do MUAs, MTAs, and MDAs talk to each other?

https://web.archive.org/web/20150709...A-MTA-MDA.html

According to the diagram there, MDA is contacting with a MTA. See the arrow.

If on host2.uiuc.edu, this diagram is valid,
MTA -> MDA -> MUA

then shouldn't this diagram be valid on host1.uiuc.edu:
MUA -> MDA -> MTA

So, shouldn't that arrow be from MTA to MTA rather than from MDA to MTA?

MUA -> MDA -> MTA <-----> MTA -> MDA -> MUA

I agree.

The diagram shows sendmail on one host forwarding mail to a sendmail instance on another host, and makes the claim that an "internal MDA" inside sendmail is responsible for this. I believe that to be incorrect use of terminology.

As far as I know, the definition of a Mail Delivery Agent has always been software that delivers mail to the mailbox of a local recipient. A Mail Transfer Agent, on the other hand, transfers mail with a non-local recipient to another server for processing.
