How do I tell what version of Debian I'm running?

I *really* hate to double-post, but...
Well...how the Hell do you even tell what distro of Debian you have, anyway? All I know is that mine is the net-installation, 2.4 kernel, KDE 3.3...

if you look in your /etc/apt/sources.list you will have some entries.

If the entries have stable near the end then your on stable, likewise with testing and unstable.

If the entries read woody, sarge, etch or sid then your on old-stable, stable, testing or unstable respectively.

So why is Debian for hippies?

uname -a will tell you what version of the Linux kernel that is running on your system, not the version of the distro..

Looking in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/debian_version are really your best bet. that will give you the version number of the distro and wether you are running stable (sarge), testing (etch) or unstable (sid)..

I have no experience with Debian, but most of the times there is a variable with the version info, type: set

With the set command you should see all variables and their is a big chance the version info is in there
