hacking BASH source code

Hi
This is a newbie programming question,
I have an assignment for uni where we were given the source code, Makefile etc.. for bash 3.1 and were assigned to do the following

Make bash change the $PATH variable to (somthing) when entering in a certain directory, then change back to the original $PATH value when leaving that directory.

I assumed that this should be done by hacking the source file for BASH. I've serched the web and looked at the man pages and all it tells me is how bash works but no description on what the source files do.

can someone give me some pointers on how I should go about it

Thanks

Surely you've covered some of this if you're being asked to do it at Uni... Look through the source files and see if any jump out. 'cd' is a shell command so there would be code somewhere that handles it's execution, look for that and go from there.
