graphic problem with Mobile Intel GM 965 Express Chipset on Centos5.1

I have a Fujitsu LifeBook A6030 with Mobile Intel GM 965 Express Chipset.
I installed CentOS5.1 but it cannot load the intel driver properly (i.e.,
if I set Driver "intel" in the xorg.conf). The error message is in
the Xorg.0.log. Allowing X to switch to a default Driver "i810" does not allow me
to change the resolution to 1280x800, the best I can get is 1024x768.

Is there is a simple way to solve this problem (and please don't ask
me to switch to other distros (I know opensuse10.3 and ubuntu 7.10 work), I would really want to take this chance to solve the problem rather than avoiding the problem) ?

On the resolution issue with the i810 driver there may be a work around. See this thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...a-2006-496953/

It goes into this exact problem with i810 and the fix using a tool called 915 resolution. It may also work for your 965 intel graphics.

I don't believe the intel driver covers that chipset, I'd say use the i810 and the 915 resolution tool as kilgore suggests.

915resolution cannot detect the chipset type

Thanks kilgoretrout and masonm!!

I downloaded 915resolution-0.5.3.tar.gz.
make; make install.
But I get this:

[root@i-bbd ~]# 915resolution -l
Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.5.3

Intel chipset detected. However, 915resolution was unable to determine the chipset type.
Chipset Id: 2a008086
Please report this problem to stomljen (modified by centguy)
[root@i-bbd ~]#

I guess the Mobile Intel GM 965 Express Chipset is too new for 915resolution.
(I may write an email to stomljen).

Any comment about building the kernel as mentioned in intellinuxgraphics.org ?

Why didn't opensuse 10.3 and ubuntu 7.10 have this problem ? CentOS is
a rather slow in catching with this chipset I think...
