Unhappy gnome keyboard switcher applet

Please can someone tell me why my keyboard switcher applet does not work
I've tried for so long but with no glue how to set it up.
this is what I've done: right click panel-add to panel-utility-keyboard layout switcher.
then I select japanese, croatian and a few others, scroll through them an each one does nothing.
I could be wrong but shouldn I be seeing the selected language charactors input when I type?
it does seem to change the top number button layout but thats it.
this is very frustrating for me can some one please help
I might have to go back to windows :-( as there is no probs
Please please help
cheers
